The State of Michigan has pledged $550,000 in grants to aid Flint grocery stores in a bid to improve the health of residents still buffeted by the impact of the drinking water crisis.

The initiative is expected be undertaken and administered by the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce. The effort will assist existing grocery stores on the north side of Flint to implement capital and operational improvements ensuring a higher quality of food offerings and the sustainability of grocery store functions in an underserved area.

Local and state officials say that attracting a national retailer turned out not to be the best solution. Instead, the idea was to boost the fortunes of existing grocery stores.
