One year into its new ownership, Fiesta Mart is starting an effort to remodel and upgrade many of its stores to keep up in the ongoing grocery wars.

Mike Byars, who took over last year as president and CEO of Fiesta Mart, said he sees a great company with "strong roots and heritage … that needed to go to the next level."

The grocery chain was founded in 1972 in Houston and was bought last year by Washington-based Acon Investments, which operates throughout Latin America. Its holdings include supermarkets and energy companies. Byars, who previously led the BI-LO supermarket chain in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina and Dallas-based Minyard Food Stores, was brought out of "semi-retirement" to lead Fiesta.
