Shellfish Harvesting Waters Closed In South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala.  — Alabama Department of Public Health officials say shellfish growing waters in Mobile and Baldwin Counties have been closed because of concerns over a potentially harmful algae bloom.

Department officials said in a release Tuesday that the closures impact shellfish harvesting waters including Cedar Point, Portersville Bay, Grand Bay, Heron Bay, Dauphin Island Bay and Bon Secour Bay.

Officials say Acting State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Miller order the closure because of high levels of red tide cells, known as Karenia brevis.
