A new commercial shrimp production facility is being planned for the Hawaii Ocean Science Technology Park on the Big Island, the executive director of the state agency managing the park told PBN Wednesday.

Pacific Mariculture Concepts LLC is in negotiations with the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority to lease about three acres at the Kailua-Kona energy park, which is already home to Shrimp Improvement Systems, one of the world’s largest providers of disease-free and genetically improved shrimp breeding stocks to aqua farmers.

Gregory Barbour, executive director for NELHA, told PBN that while Shrimp Improvement Systems produces shrimp broodstock mostly for Asian markets, Pacific Mariculture Concepts will produce shrimp for local consumption.
