Bill Doubling Beef Checkoff Passes ND Legislature

BISMARCK – North Dakota lawmakers have approved a bill doubling the $1-per-head beef checkoff on cattle sold in the state.
House members passed House Bill 1238 by a vote of 69-22 in February. The Senate approved it 45-2 on March 18 after making minor changes, and the House concurred with those changes Wednesday.
Beef producers currently pay a $1-per-head federal checkoff collected by the North Dakota Beef Commission. Half of the funds are used nationally – sent to a Cattlemen’s Beef Board or to the Federation of State Beef Councils – while the commission keeps the other half.
