Maine Scallop Season Strongest In 10 Years

PORTLAND, Maine — Preliminary data indicates Maine's 2013-14 scallop season was the strongest in the state in more than a decade, despite a harsh winter and new regulations that were unpopular with some fishermen.

State data shows fishermen caught 424,547 pounds of scallop meat. Data also shows the catch was valued at nearly $5.2 million. Both figures were the highest totals in more than 12 years.

The Maine scallop season runs from December to March. Data for the 2013-14 scallop season is not fully compiled. A state spokeswoman said a strong December catch suggests totals will top the 2012-13 season's 427,080-pound haul and nearly $4.9 million value.
