A biology research team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has developed a testing method for shellfish bacteria.
Asim Bej, a professor in the UAB Department of Biology, and his research team have a new test for Vibrio vulnificus – which is responsible for more than 95 percent of all seafood-related deaths, a UAB release said.
The bacteria can be fatal predominantly to persons with an underlying illness, such as liver disease, or a compromised immune system, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
The illness can be contracted through contact with an open wound in warm waters or through the consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish, the CDC said.
