A seafood watchdog group has upset fishing industry leaders – and confused some seafood buyers – by warning consumers to avoid most California and Oregon salmon.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch guide offers advice on which seafood options are ecologically sustainable and which ones should be avoided to protect ocean resources. "
The guide recently gave wild-caught salmon south of Cape Falcon, near Manzanita, an "avoid" rating because of declining Sacramento River salmon populations and questionable fishery management.
The Oregon Salmon Commission, a state-sponsored marketing group, has received calls from people who thought the listing meant the fish were contaminated or otherwise unsafe to eat.
