VALDEZ, Alaska — The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports a 12-hour commercial harvest record for Copper River sockeye salmon. The department says 236,000 sockeyes were caught in Monday's fishing period.
The run has been strong from the start. KCHU-radio in Valdez reports 105,300 sockeyes were caught during the first 12 hours of fishing on May 16. The second harvest period brought in 115,000.
The price of Copper River sockeyes has dropped from $4 per pound to $1.99 per pound since the first fishing period. Prices for king salmon have dropped 50 cents to $6 a pound. Chum salmon prices have remained steady at 20 cents per pound.
