Record rainfall in Pennsylvania continues to affect the local oyster industry.
The oyster beds of the northern Delaware Bay, notably those near Nantuxent Cove and Cohansey Cove, remain closed this week, following analysis of samples taken over the weekend.
With the bay still struggling to return to normal in the wake of Hurricane Irene, the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee and the resulting rains have caused a massive influx of fresh water into the bay.
According to “Apparently the remnants of Lee have dropped lots of water in Pennsylvania. This has dropped the salinity levels in the bay. We are seeing a problem with critical dilution,” said Lawrence Ragonese, of the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection.
