National Fisheries Institute Applauds Extension of EU Catch Certificate Flexibilities

Reston, VA – The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) is applauding the extension of EU catch certificate flexibilities.

The July 9 announcement that the European Union has extended flexibilities for U.S. seafood export catch certificate requirements through November 30 is welcome news for American seafood companies that rely on access to European markets, notes Lisa Wallenda Picard, NFI’s president and CEO.

NFI has consistently advocated for this extension on behalf of its members, emphasizing the need for a practical approach that reflects the realities of U.S. seafood supply chains while maintaining strong efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The confusion surrounding these requirements has created unnecessary challenges for seafood businesses that simply want to continue providing high-quality, sustainable American seafood to customers throughout Europe. We thank President Trump, Secretary Lutnick, and the dedicated staff at NOAA for their hard work and advocacy on behalf of American seafood companies.

This extension provides much-needed certainty for American exporters while NOAA and the European Union continue working toward a long-term solution that supports traceability objectives without disrupting legitimate seafood trade. We appreciate the Administration’s continued engagement on this issue and look forward to working together toward a permanent, practical path forward.
