Over the past 20 years, our work on sustainable seafood, both farmed and wild, has changed and expanded. The seafood industry and governments worldwide now actively engage with us to improve how they fish, farm and manage their ocean resources. These new relationships are powerful and evolving every day.
Some of our new relationships are with groups of small fish farms, sometimes numbering in the tens of thousands. Much of the seafood we eat is from these small, often family-run farms. Those farmers are interested in protecting the environment and accessing markets that demand sustainable seafood. Unfortunately, many of the sustainability tools available now were designed for larger organizations with more money and resources. At Seafood Watch, we’ve been working with small farmers, NGOs, governments and corporations to address that gap and find a collaborative path to sustainability that meets the needs of small farmers.
