The last sardine cannery in the United States will shut down this week in Maine, bringing to a close an industry that has dominated many of the state's small coastal villages for 135 years.
The first U.S. sardine cannery opened in Maine in 1875, when a New York businessman set up the Eagle Preserved Fish Co. in Eastport, the Associated Press reports.
The lone survivor — Stinson Seafood plant in Gouldsboro — will shut its doors after a century in operation.
