BILOXI — Government officials told a small group of residents on Thursday that they were just following protocol when they closed fishing waters this summer.
“That started the negative talk about our Gulf seafood not being safe to eat, but we tested everything before, during and after the well was capped,” said Joe Jewell with the Office of Marine Fisheries at a public meeting held to promote Gulf seafood. “We may not have done as good a job as we should have communicating to the public back then.”
Jewell and officials from several other state agencies discussed the latest test results at the Biloxi Community Center to give the public more assurances that Gulf seafood is safe to eat.
Organizers said they were disappointed with the low number of people who attended the meeting.
