Gulf Coast Oyster Harvest Continues To Decline

APALACHICOLA, Fla. – Apalachicola oysters are prized throughout Florida and the Gulf Coast for their unique blend of salinity and sweetness. Generations of families have made their livings off oysters harvested from Apalachicola Bay.
But people in the small community of about 2,500 fear their way of life could be coming to end because of financial, regulatory and environmental realities.
The annual oyster harvest is in sharp decline. Federal and state officials have closed some areas of Apalachicola Bay to harvesting and restricted the harvest in other areas. Environmental experts are working to bring back the oysters, but that process is slow.
