Canadian Retailer To Drop Atlantic Cod, Six Other Endangered Species

Montreal-based Metro Inc. says it is getting into the swim of sustainable fisheries policies by pulling off its shelves seven threatened fish species.
It is the first Canadian supermarket giant to pledge a complete withdrawal of Atlantic cod from its fresh and frozen fish offerings.
Metro's sustainable fish policy is to come on stream gradually in supermarkets across Quebec and Ontario and is to be fully implemented by June 2011.
The policy, which was launched Thursday, sees seven species withdrawn: Atlantic cod, bluefin tuna, orange roughy, Chilean seabass, New Zealand hoki, skate and shark.
