A Canadian company is seeking funding to start a mussel processing facility Down East that would create as many as 30 new jobs.
Atlantic Pacific Trading Inc. of Newfoundland is looking for $500,000 in startup capital to retrofit an existing building in Steuben as a mussel processing operation, according to The Ellsworth American. CEO Peter Eveleigh told the paper he's asking for financial assistance from both the U.S. and Canadian governments to start the operation, which would initially create 20 to 30 jobs. Once operational, the business would be managed by building owner Randy Bushey.
Eveleigh said his company handles about 70% of the mussel processing business in the province of Newfoundland, and that the venture would be unique because the building's existing in-ground cement tanks would be used to hold mussels in recirculating ocean water.
