Return a handful of plastic bags to Wegmans Food Markets and you can help save a tree — or maybe an entire forest.
In the latest phase of a campaign by the Rochester grocer to increase recycling of disposal plastic bags, Wegmans has pledged a donation to the Nature Conservancy based on how many extra bags people return to its stores in the month of April.
Specifically, the grocer will give the conservation group 50 cents for each pound of plastic above 177,000 pounds, which was the amount returned by consumers in April 2013. Wegmans pledged a minimum of $10,000, but is willing donate more.
