Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market Coming To Beaverton, OR By Late May

A Walmart grocery store in Northwest Beaverton is expected to open by late May and will be the first of its kind on the West Coast, company representatives said this week at a neighborhood meeting.

The 43,000-square-foot store at 17275 N.W. Cornell Road will primarily offer groceries, including fresh produce, frozen foods, meat, dairy and organic foods, along with a pharmacy and some household items. It will not have the full amenities of a superstore. The store, which is being renovated, will hire about 95 people.

Walmart grocery stores, which it calls Neighborhood Markets, have many locations in southern and eastern parts of the country, but it wanted to branch out, according to Jennifer Spall, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The smaller locations, which range from 40,000 to 60,000 square feet, allow the company to open more stores without having to find the 20 or more acres for a superstore, which average about 185,000 square feet.

The company had thought its first location would be in California, but the timing of the renovation and construction schedules lined up to have the first opening in Beaverton, Spall said.
