Stater Bros. Holdings Inc. reported higher profits in the second quarter as sales turned around after more than a year of declines.

The San Bernardino-based grocery chain reported net income of $8.8 million for the second quarter that ended March 27, a 47 percent increase from $6 million in the same period last year.

Sales increased about 3.2 percent in the quarter on a same-store basis, the first positive trend since 2009. Total sales were also up 3.2 percent, to $913.4 million.
