SAN JOSE, Calif.—Santa Clara County is joining San Francisco and other California cities and counties in banning plastic shopping bags.
The Santa Clara County supervisors voted Tuesday to prohibit retailers in unincorporated areas of the county from dispensing the plastic bags.
The San Jose Mercury News reports that the ban will affect 56 retailers, who distribute an estimated 32,000 plastic bags a year. It's scheduled to go in effect Jan. 1.
