Syracuse, NY — A new supermarket alternative for Central New York debuted Sunday in Syracuse.

Discounter PriceRite — from New Jersey-based Wakefern Food Corp., which also operates the ShopRite supermarket chain — opened its doors, at a hot corner:1605 Erie Boulevard East, at Teall Avenue.

Along the lines of the Aldi and Save-A-Lot chains, PriceRite is a limited-selection supermarket group. The 36,000-square-foot store in a new strip plaza has a wide mix of national — yes, national — and store brands, said Jim Dorey, vice president of merchandising and marketing at Massachusetts-based PriceRite.

“We built a brand-new store in Syracuse and we’re excited about that,” said Dorey. “A lot of times we go into second-generation space, so we kind of have to make it work. Here, we were able to build a store that we really wanted at an intersection we felt was best for our customers.”
