Spark's Deli, a modest eatery in an industrial corner of Queens, on Tuesday became the first of New York's 24,000 restaurants to get slapped with a letter grade under a new system evaluating their cleanliness and food preparation.
The 24-seat deli received an "A," the highest of the three grades—the others are B and C—that food inspectors will award. The grades must be prominently displayed in restaurant windows, on 8-by-11-inch placards.
