GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Meijer plans to open six small format stores in urban settings by 2021.

This is new territory for the Midwest retailer that pioneered the supercenter concept more than a half century ago, but reflects Meijer's determination to stay in sync with changing shopping patterns.

Meijer previously announced plans to open its first nearly 40,000 square-foot store – called Bridge Street Market – on Grand Rapids' West Side, in the summer. A ground breaking will happen this summer on a second location east of downtown Detroit, that will open in 2019.
