Giant Eagle has had a driveaway hit on its hands for the past few years in the form of its gas discount program, which goes by the kind of name only a marketer would dream up – fuelperks!
Not only have cross-town competitors developed rival versions, but grocery store chains from North Carolina and Florida to Minnesota and Wisconsin have begun licensing the fuelperks! program to try to turn their shoppers into discount chasing fanatics. Oil company BP is now part of a venture to expand the fuelperks! network into even more corners of the country.
Meanwhile, the team at the O’Hara-based grocery chain is trying for a second success with a food discount program meant to build on the popular gas program. But getting customers to change their lives – and spending habits – to fully exploit this newer offer seems more challenging.
