IMPERIAL VALLEY, CA – As temperatures climb well into the 80’s and 90’s, we can tell spring is here & summer is right around the corner. Grilling season is fast approaching and with that, California sweet corn is ready to make its debut come mid-April!
“Every year is different.”, said Ryan Van Groningen, President of Van Groningen & Sons, Inc. Manteca, CA. “There are a number of variables that affect California growing and consuming but a lot of it has to do with the weather. We had a very wet winter here in California, so right when the rain lets up, everyone is ready to spend some much needed time outside.” There are so many creative & delicious ways to use sweet corn on your table this spring. Our timeless favorite is grilling corn on the cob, with the husks pulled back exposing the kernels, but we can’t wait to try some more interesting recipes such as elote (a Mexican-style street corn) or Sweet Corn salad for an easy spring side. We also love to freeze our fresh local sweet corn to use the rest of the year.
Van Groningen & Sons anticipates a great crop for sweet corn this year, including white, bi-color & yellow varieties. Last year, growers struggled in California with oversupply and lower demand. With temperatures remaining warm & harvest updates showing excellent quality, we anticipate another strong start to sweet corn season this year with promotable quantities from the start.
Fire up those grills!
