With South Carolina situated perfectly in the nation’s “pecan belt,” which wraps itself from North Carolina to California, statewide pecan producers agreed earlier this month to collaborate in a specialized national marketing effort.

“I’m more excited about the pecan industry going in and working together now,” said Tom Harmon of Gilbert, a pecan grower and member of the Southeastern Pecan Growers Association board of directors.

Harmon spoke about a recent “move in the (pecan) industry” to unify.

With a large portion of the nation’s pecan crop exported to areas such as China and areas of Turkey, the nation’s pecan industry may be vulnerable in the face of adverse political worldwide political events, Harmon said.
