Everett, MA — Spring is finally here, and with it, the promise of those dainty little delicacies known as fiddleheads.

For serious foodies, chefs and those who simply love to sample fresh, regional flavors it’s a time of great anticipation — and a little bit of anxiety. For as well-loved as the fiddlehead is, it’s not the easiest veggie to come by.

Fiddleheads, the tightly furled fronds of baby ferns, have to be carefully harvested, to maintain supplies, during a relatively short season (typically mid-April to mid-June) that is weather-dependent. It’s right about now that fans of these fair fronds are a bit frenzied – when are they coming and where will we get them?

Ruma’s has the answer. Over the past 20 years, we’ve become one of the largest fiddlehead distributors on the East Coast. From our 20,000 square foot facility – just a stone’s throw from the New England Produce Center in Chelsea, MA – we pack fresh, cleaned fiddleheads in 5 and 10 pound increments as well as clamshell pints. Each delivery also includes some great recipes we’ve culled from a number of trusted sources over the years.

Our strong relationships with experienced pickers throughout northern New England allow us to supply the freshest, highest quality fiddleheads to supermarket chains, independent grocers, restaurants, farmers markets and folks who just love to cook them up in their own kitchens. No matter where you are in the U.S., Ruma’s allows everyone the opportunity to enjoy the delicious, unique taste (the consensus seems to be “a bit nutty, a bit like asparagus”) of fiddleheads – we ship nationwide by ground and air.

Ruma’s Fruit and Produce Co. has been family owned and operated since 1900, when founder Giacomo Ruma sold his first tomato from a pushcart in Boston’s West End. For the past century, Ruma’s has remained committed to distributing only the finest fruits and vegetables available through our wholesale and our popular fruit and gourmet gift baskets.
