There is no tool except vigilance at the moment to contain a deadly citrus tree disease that is making its way across the map.

But there's been a tremendous push by researchers to find a way to control whichWhile a “silver bullet” is still to be found and any potential fix is a long way off, the research is showing promise, Ted Batkin, president of the Citrus Research Board in California, told the Yuma Sun during a recent visit to the community.

“I'm becoming hopeful there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm seeing encouraging things.”

Researchers are exploring biological controls as a solution, Batkin said.

“So far it's all a work in progress,” he said, but researchers are gaining an understanding of the genomics of the bacterium that causes the disease in trees. And with that understanding comes a better grasp of how to create a defense mechanism in the trees.
