New MountainKing Steakhouse Potato Promotion Rides Momentum Of Small Package Sales

HOUSTON, TX – With sales of small-packaged fresh potatoes experiencing double-digit growth, Texas-based MountainKing Potatoes has introduced a new retail promotion focused on its 1.5#, 3# and four-count sizes while enticing shoppers with the flavors of the great American steakhouse.

MountainKing’s Steakhouse Potato Sale features the company’s 3# Steakhouse Roasters, Steakhouse B-Golds and Steakhouse Golds, 1.5# Steakhouse Roasters and four-count trays of its Steakhouse Bakers with simple, restaurant-style cooking instructions printed on each package.

Participating retailers will receive end-cap displays with feature ad support and full-size display bins encouraging shoppers to experience the steakhouse quality of the MountainKing varieties with the added convenience of the smaller packaged sizes.

“The smaller bags are ideal for millennial shoppers looking to prepare a restaurant-style potato dish suitable for smaller portion sizes,” notes John Pope, MountainKing’s vice president of sales and marketing. “Plus, the smaller bags lead to increased purchase velocity – shoppers come back wanting more.”

The launch of MountainKing’s Steakhouse Potato Sale comes as sales of smaller package sizes continue to outperform other fresh potato categories.

For the 52-week period ending October 1, 2016, total unit sales of 3# bags are up 13.8%; 1.5# bags are up 20.7%; and four-count trays are up a whopping 30.8%, according to MountainKing.  Total dollar volume for each size also experienced double-figure growth during the same period.  Moreover, the smaller sizes carry a transaction ring up to $3.18 per unit.

“The numbers don’t lie,” says Pope.  “There are big-time profits in the smaller bag sizes.”

MountainKing Potatoes is one of the world’s largest growers of high-flavor potato varieties.  Currently, about one million U.S. households enjoy MountainKing products every week.
