(Frankenmuth, Mich.) – Amateur cooks have until the end of the year to enter the 6th Annual Michigan’s Best Homemade Apple Pie Contest and a new contest making its debut alongside the popular pie bake-off.

The first-time Favorite Michigan Apple Recipe Contest will feature all types of Michigan Apple dishes other than pie.

“Our focus will still be on pie, however the addition of this second contest will serve to showcase just how versatile apples are,” said Holly Whetstone, marketing and communications specialist for Michigan Apple Committee – one of the sponsors of the event.

Recipes for either contest must be submitted to Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth by Dec. 31. The top entries will be selected to compete on-site Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011 in a heated tent behind Zehnder’s.

“Contestants will bring their already-prepared dishes the day of the event to be judged,” said Whetstone. “We’ll have entertainment and cooking demonstrations going during the judging. After the winners are determined, the audience can do some taste-testing themselves.”

The events will take place Wednesday, Jan. 26 in Frankenmuth: Favorite Apple Recipe Contest at 10 a.m. and Michigan’s Best Apple Pie at 1 p.m.

Bakers of the top three best pies (recipes must include Pioneer Sugar) will receive $500, $250 and $100, respectively. Awards for the favorite apple recipe contest are $250, $150 and $100.
