Lutz' Lessons – Exciting New Feature For Retailers On The USPB Resource Center
August 15, 2011 | 1 min to read
A major focus of the USPB’s retail marketing efforts is to help keep industry members current on sales trends with food retailers. As an important tool in this effort, the USPB invests a significant portion of its annual retail program budget into purchasing sales data from Nielsen/FreshFacts and making it readily available to the industry for their use.
FreshFacts collects point-of-sale data from nearly 13,000 US grocery retailers every week, encompassing the purchase of both packaged fresh potatoes (via scanning of UPCs) as well as random weight, or bulk, potato sales (via PLU codes input at checkout). This data enables the USPB to look at the assortment, pricing and promotion of fresh potatoes in the largest of all retail food channels, and allows us to see trends and share changes among different geographies or time periods.
In an effort to better inform the industry members and extract even more value from our investment in retail sales data, the USPB is proud to introduce an exciting new feature on the USPB Resource Center. Every three months, the USPB will post a short video, hosted by Steve Lutz, Executive Vice President of the Perishables Group, titled Lutz’s Lessons. Each edition will highlight the most important trends in the fresh potato category, drawing on the Perishables Group’s in-depth analysis of the latest FreshFacts sales data and their broad experience in the produce category. By drawing attention to important shifts in potato assortments, pricing or promotions, the USPB assists our industry members in making more informed marketing
