A little moth that's caused big problems for grape growers appears to be beaten, according to Mendocino County Agricultural Commissioner Tony Linegar.
He said Friday there was no sign of the European Grapevine Moth as of last week, when the second generation of the pest ended. Traps that use pheromones, light and sugar to attract the moths yielded none of the invasive bugs during their "second flight," Linegar said.
"That's very encouraging," he said with a smile, but noted in the same breath that the battle isn't over yet.
About 179 square miles of the Ukiah Valley, including 7,000 acres of grapes, is under quarantine because 35 of the invasive moths were found in traps earlier this year, during the first generation.
