LOS ALAMITOS, CA — As a leader and female role model in the produce industry, Karen Caplan has always had a lot to say. Now, with the help of her new blog, Whats On Karens Plate, (http://whatsonkarensplate.blogspot.com) Caplan is sharing her thoughts, insights and stories from her many years working in produce and her unique position as a woman business owner. Caplan has served as national chairman of the United Fresh Produce Association, and was the first-ever female chairman of the Los Angeles-based Fresh Produce & Floral Council, in addition to many other industry and business-related leadership positions.
Caplan, along with her sister, Jackie Caplan Wiggins, co-owns of Friedas Inc., the specialty produce distribution company began by their mother, Frieda Caplan, in 1962. Caplan began working for her mother at a young age and has essentially grown up in the produce industry. Today, she is president and CEO of Friedas.
Blogging is another great way for me to communicate the companys mission to Change the Way America Eats, said Caplan. Friedas Inc. has long been known for its innovative and exotic product line, including specialty fruits and veggies from around the globe. Founder Frieda Caplan is recognized internationally for introducing the kiwifruit to U.S. supermarkets in the 1960s.
Karen Caplans twice-weekly blog posts cover a range of topics intended for a broad audience, from produce industry members to everyday consumers to business owners and entrepreneurs. Blogging provides a candid and informal platform for thought leaders, such as Caplan, to share her experience, expertise and passion, in business, produce, food, and beyond.
Karens Blog, along with companys existing Nuts About Fruit blog, mark Friedas continued efforts in social media. In the spring of 2009, the company launched its Facebook page and Twitter accounts, and continues to grow its following by sharing unique and interesting posts about exotic fruits and vegetables.
The goal is to continue to educate consumers about the vast array of specialty produce now available, said Caplan. In addition to strengthening our online presence, Social Media is a great way to connect directly with our consumers and contacts around the world.
