The New Jersey Department of Agriculture hosted its 16th Annual BBQ for the Eastern Produce Council at Demarest Farm in Hillsdale, NJ on Tuesday, May 19.

EPC President and Executive VP Produce & Floral JOH, Theresa Lowden, welcomed the audience and covered EPC business before turning things over to Ed Wengryn, New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Beaver, Sunny Valley’s Director or Sales and Marketing, Brandon Raso of Variety Farms Inc., and Zach Heiken of ZRH Farms, all of whom provided updates on NJ crops and the impact the weather has had on them over the course of the past month.

Edwin Steep, brother of Theresa Nolan, then announced this year’s EPC/Nolan Family Foundation Scholarship winner, Michael Larson.  Michael is the son of EPC Member Rob Larson of Alpha1Marketing/Krasdale.  Michael will be a Sophomore at Rowan University in the fall.

This marks the 12th year the EPC has offered the scholarship together with Theresa Nolan and her Family Foundation. What makes this scholarship unique is that it is based solely on the essay that applicants write about an ethical situation they were faced with and how they responded to it. All essays are reviewed by the Nolan Family Foundation, not the Eastern Produce Council.

Next up on the EPC calendar is their Annual Golf Outing on Tuesday, June 9 at Fox Hollow Golf Club in Branchburg, NJ.  For more information, visit their website, easternproducecouncil.com.
