BARTOW — Amid calls to radically cut costs, the Florida Department of Citrus has unveiled its preliminary operating budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

The proposed budget will be presented to the Florida Citrus Commission on Wednesday. Commissioners will provide feedback, but won’t vote on a final budget until June 14.

HOW IT BEGAN: In February, a dozen of the state’s most influential citrus growers called for drastic downsizing of the Florida Department of Citrus, which functions as a marketing agency for the state’s citrus products. The Citrus Commission serves as a board of directors for the department.
