Gilroy, CA (December 2010) — In 2011, farmers will be the new celebrities* according to Technomic, Inc., a leading foodservice market research firm. Celebrity is nothing new to Christopher Ranch whose long-held traditions of quality, sustainability and locally grown products have now evolved into widely accepted foodservice trends including consumers’ growing preference for farm/estate branded ingredients on the menu.** When Don Christopher purchased land in Gilroy, California, over 50 years ago, he planted an Italian garlic variety selected for flavor and raised from heirloom seed. At the same time, he established the eco-friendly, environmental farming practices still in place today.

Don’s son, Bill Christopher, is now at the helm of Christopher Ranch, which he stewards with the same steadiness of purpose and dedication to quality that has been the hallmark of the family business. Tending seed stock that is now designated heirloom, Bill is focused on setting the stage for the next 50 years of family farming. Helping prepare for the future also is Bill’s son, Ken who has now joined Christopher Ranch.

Ken Christopher studied International Economics at University of San Diego and received his MBA at University of San Francisco in 2009. His emphasis is on the same area of the Ranch that Don Christopher concentrated on over half a century ago; Fresh Garlic. Ken oversees the fresh garlic graders that run over 80,000 pounds daily in a variety of different packs of garlic from 30# boxes to 3# bags. “I’m learning as much as I can about the Ranch,” says Ken. “Besides the daily production schedules, quality control and overseeing a staff of 50 plus, I spend part of my time learning about other operations here at the Ranch including Sales, Farming and Production.”
