House Of Raeford Will Not Rebuild NC Plant

A chicken plant has decided not to rebuild after a fire destroyed the facility, a company official said Friday.

The 61,000 square foot facility was destroyed by a midnight blaze on April 1. The plant, which was located at 21501 Charles Craft Lane, Maxton, employed 60 before the fire. Damage was estimated at $2 million.

Company spokesman Dave Witter said the company has scrapped plans to replace the facility because of economic concerns.

“House of Raeford Farms has decided not to rebuild their Mechanically Separated Chicken processing plant in Maxton," Witter said in an email. "At the time the company decides to re-start production, it will be consolidated into an existing House of Raeford processing plant."
