In a month where so far most agricultural, energy and metal commodities have wilted under world macroeconomic pressures, hogs have stood tall.
Iowa’s signature livestock product accomplished the unexpected feat of rising every day this week in the commodity markets while corn, soybeans, wheat and cattle all suffered reversals.
For Iowa, that’s more than just a point of pride.
Iowa has a hog population of 19 million, more than double second-place North Carolina, and hog sales annually bring $5 billion or more in cash to Iowa’s 8,300 hog producers and support a network of processing plants around the state.
