ROCHESTER, Wash. — Christmas tree farmers say the federal government has delivered them a lump of coal just in time for the holidays.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has delayed a government-coordinated, industry-supported public relations boost much like the one delivered to the dairy industry with the Got Milk campaign for another year.
Under the program, any farmer who cuts and sells 500 or more trees a year would have to pay an assessment of 15 cents per tree. That money would go into a fund used to promote the sale of trees.
