The Dutch flower auctions’ turnover has shown a significant dip in the last month. Gross revenue has in fact fallen below that of last year for the first time in 2011, albeit by a relatively minor -0.6 percent.
In the meantime, supply remains high compared to the prior year, with 4.2 percent more produce being shipped to the auctions. On average, those flowers and plants netted 32 eurocents a piece over the first five months of 2011. That represents a decrease of two cents compared to 2010, largely explaining the decline in revenue.
Prices for the month of May stood a good deal lower than during the same period in 2010, when levels were comparatively high. This is primarily due to the increase in supply, which amounted to almost ten percent, putting significant downward pressure on price levels.
