Sunday Valentine’s Creates Floral Frenzy, Shops Welcome Extra Day

Having Valentine’s Day fall on a Sunday as it does this year is more than just
an extra day to say “I Love You” – it’s also an extra day of holiday sales for
businesses counting on emotion-inspired disposable income.

Many restaurants, candy shops, and florists said they will be open on Sunday to
capture last-minute Valentine’s Day spending by consumers eager to show their
affections. And in the midst of a nationwide recession, an extra day of sales
can only help the bottom line, business owners said.

“We’re taking this weekend very seriously,” said Gus Mancy, partner in the
historic Mancy’s Steakhouse and three other local restaurants. The steakhouse
will be open on a Valentine’s Day Sunday for the first time since 1999. “We’re
booking up the entire restaurant, and it looks like we’re going to be 100
percent booked.”
