Shirley Pennimen's job at a tech firm leaves her wanting for an analog hobby, something to get her out of the house and in contact with her surroundings. Mission College in Santa Clara gives Pennimen precisely that opportunity–and teaches her how to make money from it, too.
Pennimen is one of about 90 students enrolled in the retail floristry program at Mission College, one of the only programs of its kind. Students not only learn the artistic and practical aspects of flower care and arrangement, but also the financial and managerial side of running a flower shop.
"I've always loved gardening, and I wanted to do something non-high tech to help me keep my sanity," said Pennimen, a Sunnyvale resident. "If I didn't work in tech, floristry is something I'd like to do part time, and the program is teaching me how I can do that."
