New Jersey Grocery Stores Have Deals On Holiday Flowers

Poinsettias have taken center stage at the supermarket, turning floral departments into seas of red, with floating accents of green, pink and white and framed by racks of fresh-cut flowers.

A visit to Stop & Shop cheers me up whenever I roll my cart near it. If you're buying, staff suggests asking for a sleeve to protect the poinsettia on its journey home.

This is particularly important if it is a large plant. These tropical plants need some shield against the cold. And the leaves bruise easily, oozing sap that can be irritating. They are not, however, poisonous plants, and their reputation should not be sullied by that old tale.
