Two days ago, we reported on the improving share of the cut flower market which florists are claiming. Today, and for the sake of completeness, we find ourselves required to report the other side of that coin as well, which is unfortunately that florist’s share of the green and flowering plant market is simultaneously decreasing.
The Horticulture Product Board, in its recent report (Dutch; .pdf) on market trends regarding indoor plants, explains as much. Only 18.5 percent of all spending on indoor plants goes to florists at the moment, a statistic that was still at 23 percent in the year’s second quarter. For further comparison, that number still stood at 28 percent in the year 2005.
When it comes to green plants, it was the garden centers that won the most market share: the portion of all spending they received jumped from 54 percent in the second quarter to 60 percent in the third. Florists, at the same time, saw their share go from 23 to only 17 percent, albeit it had stood at 19 percent earlier on, in the first quarter of the year. The change was no less substantial in the field of flowering plants; with a decrease from 23 to 21 percent between the second and third quarter. That percentage was still at 32, in fact, in the first quarter.
