With bright yellow flowers starting to emerge and the daffodil harvest underway,
Central Saanich farmer Ian Vantreight couldn’t resist the swipe.
“We don’t want to do the Good Samaritan thing and beautify the municipality any
more than we have to, so we’ve got to get picking before the flowers bloom too
much,” Vantreight said yesterday as about 180 pickers hit the fields to bring in
Canada’s largest daffodil crop.
Vantreight has been frustrated with a long list of detractors and regional
politicians’ resistance to his proposal to develop a rocky knoll surrounding
agricultural land for an 89-unit residential development, a move he says will
preserve the fourth-generation family farm and make it viable.
