Consumers Favor Garden Centers

Garden retailers, consumers prefer shopping with you. That’s according to the Garden Writers Association Foundation’s (GWAF) 2010 Early Spring Gardening Trends Report, which polled consumers from March 3-6.

The report finds that 54% of consumers intended to purchase most of their spring gardening plants at garden centers, with 37% choosing big boxes for most of their purchases. In 2005, when GWAF began tracking this data, only 40% of respondent planned to buy most of their spring plants at garden centers, compared to 51% who favored mass merchants.

Finding the “best quality” (46%) is the No. 1 factor for consumers when deciding where to shop for plants. The second biggest factor is access to a “trained and educated sales staff,” jumping from 24% in 2009 to 32% in 2010. “Best price” falls from second place in 2009 (26%) to third place this year (19%).
