A Look At Some Of The New Garden Plants For 2013

After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, gardeners finally have time to sit back and take a look at the seed and plant catalogs that have started to arrive. Even if you never order from a catalog it is fun to see what is new. Here is a look at some of the new plant offerings you may find at local garden centers this spring.
Superbells® ‘Lemon Slice’ calibrachoa is a real attention getter. “Wow!” was my response when I first saw a picture of it. The unique pinwheel pattern of white and bright yellow is new in calibrachoas. A tender perennial (treat it as an annual in WNY), calibrachoa produces flowers that look like small petunias. Sometimes called million bells, these plants are prolific bloomers that produce hundreds of one-inch wide flowers from spring to frost. ‘Lemon Slice’ is self-cleaning, meaning that you do not need to deadhead it. It has a mounding-trailing habit and will brighten up any container. It requires excellent drainage and full sun. This flower is sure to catch your attention.
Foliage plants can be great additions to the garden or containers, providing long lasting color through the season. ColorBlaze® ‘Keystone Kopper’™ coleus has coppery orange foliage that is unique. This well-branched plant is great in sun or shade and performs well in containers or the garden. ColorBlaze® ‘Marooned’™ coleus has burgundy and maroon foliage which can add a splash of color to your garden. Both are labeled as heat tolerant which makes them useful for playing the “thriller” role in containers.
