Reigning US Champion Captures 2012 World Cheese Championship

MILLERSBURG, OHIO — Guggisberg Cheese of Millersburg, Ohio, won gold once again for their Swiss cheese, and this time it was on an international level. Guggisberg defeated entries from Europe, Scandanavia, and the United States at the World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison, Wisconsin.  The World Championship Cheese Contest takes place every two years and alternates annually with the United States Cheese Championship.  The competition included over 2500 cheese entries from all over the world.  Once received, the cheese entries were divided into classes and then judged on a scale ranging from one to one hundred by industry experts and some of the field’s finest professors from Europe and the US.  The top three scores in each category are recognized for their excellence, with the top spot receiving the title of World Champion.

At the 2012 competition, Guggisberg Cheese was one of the few companies privileged enough to be awarded World Championships in multiple categories.  Guggisberg topped the “Rindless Swiss” category, receiving a score of 97.4 on their Swiss Block entry produced at the Sugarcreek, Ohio, plant.  Rindless Swiss was the same grouping in which the company swept the top three prizes at the United States Championship in 2011.  Also, for the first time in company history, Guggisberg won the World Championship in the Marbled Curd category with their Marble cheese submission produced at the plant in Middlebury, Indiana. Guggisberg’s Marble is a blend of both Colby and Moneterey Jack cheeses, and was given a score of 97.9 out of 100.

Guggisberg only narrowly missed out on a third blue ribbon. Their Longhorn submission in the Colby category placed second with a near perfect score of 99.45, and missed out on winning by one of the tiniest margins in competition history.
