NC's Prodigal Farm's Goat Cheese Operation Expanding With Cows

The recent Beard Foundation’s award dinner had something local on the menu; Hunkadora, a goat cheese made in Rougemont outside of Durham.
The cheese comes from Prodigal Farm, the only Animal Welfare-Approved dairy farm in the state besides the Chapel Hill Creamery. The farm has about 350 goats, of which 80 are milking goats. While the cheeses are sold around the country, the owners of the farm want to expand and are taking it one step at a time.
They completed the first of many steps towards expansion on Sunday, when their Kickstarter campaign closed out, totally funded with $45,621. Co-owner of the farm Kathryn Spann says she wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon, when the goal was met several hours early.
